FAQ
How does Michigan No-Fault apply to motorcycle crashes, and what benefits may not be available to riders?
Motorcycle accidents are treated differently than traditional automobile accidents under Michigan law.
Unlike occupants of cars, motorcyclists are generally not automatically entitled to No-Fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits through their own motorcycle insurance. However, injured riders may still qualify for benefits through the insurer of a motor vehicle involved in the crash or through another priority source under Michigan law.
Because motorcycle claims involve different rules and insurance priorities, determining available benefits can be complicated. Riders often face disputes over medical expenses, wage loss benefits, and long-term care needs. Understanding the available coverage early can help avoid costly mistakes.
