FAQ
How does Michigan no-fault apply when a teen driver causes a crash?
Michigan's no-fault system applies the same basic rules whether the driver is 17 or 47, but a teen driver in the mix often raises a few extra questions for the people involved.
If you were injured by a teen driver, your own no-fault insurance is typically your first source of coverage for medical bills and lost wages, regardless of who caused the crash. Beyond that:
- The teen's policy, or more often their parent's or guardian's policy, may be responsible for covering damages
- If the teen was driving a family vehicle, the parents' insurance is usually the primary coverage
- If the teen was driving without permission or outside the terms of the policy, coverage questions can get more complicated
- Serious injuries may open the door to a claim beyond no-fault benefits, since Michigan allows injured people to pursue additional compensation when injuries meet a certain threshold of severity
Every family's insurance situation looks a little different, so the details of the teen's coverage and driving history really do matter here.
