FAQ

What evidence can disappear quickly after a semi-truck crash in Michigan?

Truck crash cases often come down to evidence that vanishes within days, sometimes hours, if no one asks for it right away. Trucking companies and their insurers know this too, which is why having someone advocating for you early can make a real difference.

  • Electronic logging device (ELD) data showing the driver's hours and whether they exceeded legal driving limits
  • Dash cam or event data recorder (EDR) footage, which many carriers overwrite on a set schedule
  • Dispatch and maintenance records, which some companies aren't required to keep long-term
  • Skid marks and road debris, which weather and traffic clear within days
  • Cargo manifests, relevant if improper loading contributed to the crash
  • Witness memories, which fade or become harder to track down as time passes

A formal request, sometimes called a spoliation letter, can legally require a trucking company to preserve this evidence. The sooner that request goes out, the better your chances of getting the full picture of what happened.
